When in doubt, wear fun shoes

Hello! I’m back, and I’m strongly recommending that everyone take a month off from their blogs!

Okay, not everyone, only people who are feeling overwhelmed and unfocused and like the thing they really need most is to take a month off and regroup. If you fit that description, I highly recommend going for it. It’s just what I needed. I have so many plans, so many irons in the fire, so many big-hearted, doodly ideas to manifest. Honestly, I still feel overwhelmed. But more focused now, and there’s definitely something to be said for that.

I spent much of June drawing coloring pages, which I will very soon assemble into a coloring book.

Each page will include a hand-lettered message like, “Bloom wild,” “It’s a good day for shenanigans,” “Own your weird,” and “Believe some impossible things today.”

My hope is that I can create a coloring book that will be challenging and meditative enough to interest adults, but fun and whimsical enough to draw in younger colorists too.

I’ve been illustrating with an eye toward creatives… and also people who are trying to find their way back to their creativity… and also people who just love to color (which I think might be everyone I know).

Here’s what 26 coloring pages look like before they get combined into a single coloring book.

The one on the upper right is a work in progress.

Four more to go, I think, and then it’s off to the presses. Stay tuned!

And there’s much more to come. I have some really fun things in the works that I can’t wait to share with you.

In the meantime, if we’re not friends on Facebook, you should send me a request. I play a lot over there. And if you’re interested in watching my work in progress, follow me on Instagram. I post art-in-the-making pretty much daily there.

I hope you had a happy June. I missed you!

p.s. We donated another $1,150 to Lisa Adams’s Sloan Kettering Metastatic Breast Cancer Research fund, for a total of $4,150. I think that’s remarkable. I know Lisa would have been ecstatic. Thank you so much to everyone who bought art for the cause.

    Welcome back.

Can’t wait to see the coloring book (and buy a copy!)

Wonderful total for Lisa’s fund at Sloan Kettering. <3

I know. I’m pretty proud of us all for what we did for the fund.

And when the books are out, you and I need to have a coloring party. (Actually, I should do that. Invite some people over to color, nosh, drink some wine. That would be fun, don’t you think?)

Yay, Teresa! You’re way close enough to come! I’m doing it. Stay tuned!

      • dellamaureen on July 10, 2015 at 7:48 am

        Can I come?

        • dellamaureen on July 10, 2015 at 7:59 am

Everything looks wonderful, Judy. So glad you’re feeling more focused, and I really can’t wait to see the finished book. SO exciting! xo

        • j on July 10, 2015 at 8:01 am

Yes, come! Maybe we need Skype…

And thank you, Della. It’s exciting for me too. I’m glad I took the month of June to hammer out a drawing (or two) a day. I’m not a fast artist, so I really needed the focused time.

I wanna come to the party too!! No Skype, for real! I can’t think of a better reason to drive north.

Two Nancy visits in one season? Pinch me! : )

I’ve cut back on my blog from 7 days a week to 5. It’s given me the ability to devote more time to all of the other hobbies I have going on right now.
I love the coloring book! Now I’ll have to invest in more coloring pencils. I like the idea of a coloring party as mentioned above–I may borrow that and ask my local friends 🙂

    • j on July 10, 2015 at 4:49 pm

Oh, Karin. You are amazing! When I very first started blogging, I blogged every day. Then twice a week. Then once a week. Now, once every two weeks, and sometimes even this is a challenge. My hat’s off to you and what you are able to fit in because I know you’re a super busy and productive poet/roller derby queen. <3

Yes, we could have all these coloring parties going on all over the place, and if everyone sends me pictures, I can post them all here. I think this could be really, really fun. I will contemplate the possibilities. Stay tuned!

      • Karin on July 10, 2015 at 5:36 pm

I’m actually stopping the blog next year. There’s a calculated number of posts left; the weekly rate will decrease until I let the domain expire.
It’s fun but with little traffic and little incentive to keep it going, well, it’s time for it to go. I won’t stop writing but oversharing–especially in a digital environment–can be too much.
Didn’t mean to hijack the thread here, just wanted to clarify 🙂

        • j on July 11, 2015 at 7:28 am

You didn’t hijack the thread. No worries. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve considered shutting down my blog. I think everybody who blogs considers it at some point(s).

These look inspiring and fun and lovely. They also draw me in; I want to stop what I am doing and start coloring.

    • j on July 11, 2015 at 7:26 am

I can’t imagine a better response than that! Yay!

  5. Beamer on July 11, 2015 at 8:56 am

I can’t wait for your coloring book to come out ! And I would love an invitation to wine and coloring! I used to do it with the big posters and friends back in the 70’s. Every one had to sign their name on the edge that they helped. We had lots of fun. And I know your party would be fun. An art party! Love it ! 🙂

    • j on July 11, 2015 at 10:06 am

Do you mean those coloring posters they used to have? I’d forgotten all about those, but I used to do them too! There were so many (psychedelic) details, they’d take days for me to color. Loved them!

  6. Nina Badzin on July 14, 2015 at 10:48 am

Love that you took a break! (I’ve been taking mini ones with weeks between posts and lots of watching Friday Night Lights.) I also think this coloring pages idea is so cool. Sharing on Fb now! It’s really inspiring.

    • j on July 16, 2015 at 9:10 am

I’ve been considering “mini posts.” More art, fewer words… Blogging balance is so elusive. Thank you, Nina!
