The things we'd rescue from the fire, illustrated!

In my last post, I asked you guys what things you’d rescue from a fire. I got answers here, on Facebook and Instagram, and in email. Your answers were touching, and so were the stories you shared of your brushes with disaster and your losses, big and small. I took our responses and made this big doodly collage. I loved drawing it. In a weird way, it felt like a sacred act, like I was sketching out the tangible pieces of our hearts, and noticing in the process how alike we are… wonderfully, neurotically, imperfectly human.

If you have trouble reading it, you should be able to click the image and see a larger version.

Thank you so much for playing with me. You guys rock. I’m so grateful for you.

This is great! I love your J doodles! I can’t think of anything to add to the list…maybe my favorite pillow;)

Ha! Damn, a favorite pillow would have fit right in. (And true, I didn’t think of that when I was thinking of what I’d rescue, but I have trouble sleeping on just any pillow.)

I love that the cat is amused, but I can’t imagine ours would be. Freaked out would be both Cleo and Squeak for sure… and even more so because they would have to be in visual contact with one another during the rescue!

Well, I envision cats being cooler in a crisis than dogs, but I admit to being swayed by my own dog’s spastic reaction to pretty much everything. ; )

Yay! I bet your actual handmade guitar rocks even more than this one, but this is how I’m picturing it. ; )

That looks soo beautiful, a very creative way of looking at all of the things we hold dear, and would grab if it came down to choosing just a few items to rescue.

      Thank you, Estrella! xo

    This is awesome!!

Thank you, Annie. I was bummed that when I got all done, I’d missed two things on my very messy list: Karin’s derby gear and your class ring. There was something very touching about the humanness of what we chose to rescue… I suppose it’s fitting that there be a fallible human at the helm of depicting it all. ; )
