That thing where you can win a coloring book…

When I finally got the proof for my coming-soon coloring book Art Out Loud, we took some cheesy photos …

My favorite j-has-a-mustache photo

… then I went through the painstaking process of proofreading the coloring book (which took two and a half minutes… because coloring book)…

… unfortunately, I had to make two changes, and it was Friday, and the art director was already gone, so I didn’t get a new e-proof until the following week…

… which I approved right away to start the 7-10 day clock ticking.

All of that means a) we’re getting really close, and b) there are still no coloring books. But I do have these two pictures of sample pages which I created for the Etsy shop…

EtsyPageSamples2 EtsyPageSamples

I know. Not as good as an actual coloring book. I agree. So I created another free downloadable coloring sheet for you!

Invalid download ID.

Also, if you leave me a comment, you could win a coloring book. I’ll pick a couple of commenters at random (throwing darts at my computer screen) and announce them in a week-ish, when the coloring books are here.

You should leave a comment. The book is really cool (she said without bias). I got heavy paper that resists bleed through, so you’ll be able to use marking pens if you want. But since some markers bleed through no matter how thick the paper, I also perforated the pages so you can pull them out and make as much of a mess as you want to. (Okay, I admit. I didn’t personally perforate the pages, but I did order it so, like the captain of my own damn ship.) Plus, the pages are 8×10 inches when torn out of the book, so you can even frame your masterpieces with standard frames and matting when you’re done!

Can you tell I’m excited? I can’t wait for this. (Although it’s good that I have this time because – even now! – I have more work to do.)

Happy weekend, everyone!

p.s. In case you’ve missed them, here’s a link to all the free, downloadable coloring pages in one place!

  1. Toni on September 4, 2015 at 2:22 am

Love the downloadable pages. My great nieces and nephews can color them with the app on my phone. Oh, and me, too! 🙂

    • j on September 4, 2015 at 7:10 am

There’s an app that does that? Will it work on Android?

  2. Della Monk on September 4, 2015 at 3:46 am

I can see now why you’ve named your colouring book “Art Out Loud.” Sounds like it’s really something to get excited about! Love the feeling of anticipation; can’t wait to get stuck in.

    • j on September 4, 2015 at 7:11 am

Well, admittedly, I might be a tiny bit biased, but I tried to think of everything I’d want in a coloring book. : )

  3. Mary Moellenhoff on September 4, 2015 at 7:03 am

I can’t wait to see the finished product! I have been too busy lately for anything creative. I really think I need a coloring book. 🙂

    • j on September 4, 2015 at 7:14 am

I think you do too. I actually started coloring one of the pages of mine (it’ll be one of the pictures on Etsy), and once I finally relaxed about it being a “product picture,” it was fun. Very meditative and soothing. I read too that coloring stimulates the parts of the brain responsible for creative thinking, so there you go. I can be your gateway drug. : )

As Little Richard said, I’m ready ready ready. (Ready ready ready to rock ‘n’ roll.)

    • j on September 4, 2015 at 8:06 am

Wop bop a loo bop a lop ba ba!

Little Richard response for you! We are so going to have a color/wine/dancing date. <3

Oooh, pretty! And I just happen to have bought some new markers…

    • j on September 4, 2015 at 9:13 am

      Perfect timing!

  6. June O'Reilly on September 4, 2015 at 8:11 am

woo hoo so excited for you, can’t wait to see the finished product

    • j on September 4, 2015 at 9:14 am

I’m excited too. This little project was a bit of a leap for me, but so far nothing but good has come from it!

  7. Nancy on September 4, 2015 at 8:53 am

So excited to get the new book! You’re right about the creativity thing. In my new job, people actually want, expect and then reward thinking (I know, weird concept!). So, when I’m stuck or not sure what to do next, I spend a few minutes coloring, and voila! The answer comes sliding in!

    • j on September 4, 2015 at 9:17 am

It’s true. The same thing happens for me when I’m drawing. I can’t tell you how many times, in the midst of a mandala piece, I’ll stop, grab my note book, and write something down – an answer, an idea, something I forgot to put on the to-do list (okay, so they’re not always strokes of genius). I love that even though you’re not consciously thinking of other things, your mind wanders a bit during the coloring (or drawing) process.

Also, I LOVE hearing good things about your new job. <3

  8. Danielle Laflamme on September 4, 2015 at 10:28 am

I would so so love that book; I want to add precious sentences to each pictures and post each around the house to remind myself how I have grown and matured! And as you remember, the butterfly will be on my bathrrom mirror, to remind me that I am now a beautiful person, no longer the nerdy, ugly carpterpillar of my teenager years that I kept seeing all my life.

    • j on September 4, 2015 at 1:14 pm

You ARE a beautiful person. Toss that old idea; it certainly doesn’t fit you anymore! <3

  9. Karin C on September 4, 2015 at 10:45 am

I’m excited you’re excited! This is going to be great!
(And I have the feeling I will want to color these sheets in more than once!)

    • j on September 4, 2015 at 3:39 pm

Yay! I’m actually also putting together a pdf version that will be available for download from my site for people who want to print the pages out on different papers, or (like you) do the same pages more than once. Or you can always do it the old fashioned way and make a copy of the pages before you color.

      So. Many. Options. 🙂

  10. Robyn Hayes on September 4, 2015 at 11:51 am

Of course I will comment as I still have that BRAND NEW UNOPENED set of coloring markers sitting here waiting for the book. Patiently, I am waiting patiently. ummmm OK?

    • j on September 4, 2015 at 1:14 pm

Can’t let those coloring markers go to waste!

  11. Rohan on September 4, 2015 at 12:28 pm

What beautiful designs! I don’t know if Canadians are eligible, but it would certainly make me very happy to win a copy of your book, so here’s my comment. 🙂

    • j on September 4, 2015 at 1:15 pm

Of course you’re eligible! I love my north-y neighbors! Thank you for commenting!

  12. Tina Tierson on September 4, 2015 at 5:41 pm

Here’s my comment: It’s fabulous! You’re fabulous! Well, maybe we’re all fabulous! I really, really, REALLY want one and if I could win one that would certainly be fabulous! And there’s even a dragonfly! That’s fabulous! (I’m a tiny bit excited!) 😁

    • j on September 5, 2015 at 7:21 am

      Yes, we’re all fabulous! <3

  13. Laurel Clark on September 4, 2015 at 5:41 pm

Do you recommend markers or colored pencils to color the pages? I would LOVE to win the book! I love the designs, the sayings, and the calligraphy! And I also love your creative, fun spirit that went into it!

    • j on September 5, 2015 at 7:25 am

Thank you so much, Laurel! I got the thickest pages I could so you should be fine with markers, though some of the designs are really detailed, so you’ll need some fine-tip ones. When I tested Sharpies out on the proof, nothing went through to the next page, but it was all visible on the back side (which is fine because the backs are blank). Still, I think there are some markers that will bleed through, so I’d put a piece of scratch paper between pages, or use the perforation to tear the page out just to be safe. …Or just use color pencils! ; )

  14. Karen S Calnan on September 4, 2015 at 5:44 pm

This coloring book will make me Happy! Coming at a perfect time. I have a whirlwind of extra chaos around me & with your color book I can find some moments to slip away and loose myself in coloring & creating an aura of peace around me. Mucho congrats to you:)

  19. beamer on September 4, 2015 at 9:05 pm

I am so happy to see a fellow artist make It to the coloring world!! You make me happy just to see what you call scribbles or doodles. I call it ART. And you are good. I have a friend artist down the road, she is 89, and she says ….why is that called “doodles?!!” …. I told her I believe that is what you named your art work. She says she needs a better promoter, she has talent that has not been seen in years. She says, when will you see her next? I said we have not met, but talk online and some day I will go to meet her and talk about art and other groovey things. She laughed and told me to save 5.00 a week and where ever she is you will meet her in a year. Well , my heart did flip flops. My first teacher of art was the man that painted all of the backgrounds at the Toledo museum Zoo. He was very cool! He taught me oils, and chalk, and media on homemade paper, he was so exciting , all I thought about was painting and art. Now with the internet I get to see a lot of peoples art. But yours captured my heart and made me see things that I just had not thought about before. So I figured I was going to purchase two of your coloring books. One for me to color, and one signed by you for my collection, and one for my artist friend down the road. Now I need 3. And my name that I thought would be cool for coloring would be …..Share Your Happy…..yep yippie, and sappy, but still fun. Like you, making people smile. So glad I can talk to you like this online!! You made my year with the mustache photo and your book. Please feel free to steal the name if you want . I can’ t wait for the launch of your book. Oh yes if you need someone here in OH to help sell , I would be more than happy to help! Hugs and love ! <3. Upcoming new artist on the hit list !!! Beamer

    • j on September 5, 2015 at 7:37 am

Thank you so much, Beamer! When I first started out, I really was just doodling, not much more than stick figures. I evolved, but didn’t change the name… until recently. I’ve been using the word doodle less often, and only for certain kinds of drawings…. ones that are doodl-y in style. I may drop it there as well because I think most people don’t think of doodle as an art genre; they think of it as the things they drew in the margins during class. I’m definitely not doing those much anymore.

I so appreciate your unfailing support and encouragement. Sending you much love and appreciation, my friend. xoxo

  20. Joy on September 4, 2015 at 9:13 pm

  22. Estrella Azul on September 5, 2015 at 2:25 am

Yay for you, it makes me so happy you’re this close to having the coloring book out! I love the pages you chose for Etsy 🙂 Congrats!!!

I do hope you won’t be throwing darts at your computer screen though… maybe have Lexi pick out a name from a hat? Unless she’d eat the paper that is 😉

    • j on September 5, 2015 at 7:46 am

Ha! I asked The Boy if he wanted to pick, but he said it was too much responsibility. ; )

  33. Joyce Q. on September 5, 2015 at 5:04 pm

Hi Judy. I love your Art Out Loud creations! I’ve downloaded a few of your freebies, but haven’t colored them yet because I need to go get a spanking brand new box of crayons. Anyway, what I really wanted to share is this: every time I see any reference to coloring, I think of that scene in the Sex and the City movie when the women are having breakfast at a cafe and talking pretty explicitly about how they like to f*ck. Charlotte’s little girl is with them (she’s coloring), so Charlotte asks if they can tone the down the language or be more subtle. So Samantha says, “Well I really like to color. I can’t color enough. I would color all day every day if I had it my way, and I would use every crayon in my box!”

Anyway, I feel exactly the same way…about, you know, coloring 😉

    • j on September 6, 2015 at 8:15 am

Haha! That’s awesome. I feel the same way too. About drawing. ; )
