Phenomenal Woman
This month, I’m honoring National Poetry Month by making art from two of my favorite poems. The first one is Maya Angelou’s “Phenomenal Woman.” I love the rhythm, voice, and take-no-prisoners attitude of this poem. In it, Maya Angelou owns her womanhood absolutely and unapologetically. Every time I read it, I feel the thrill of recognition and the yearning to be more and bigger and better.
I’ll do the other poem on my next post, April 24th. If you’re doing anything to celebrate National Poetry Month, let me know in the comments section. I want to come celebrate with you!
Happy weekend, you guys.
xo
Love this, Judy! The poem, the art, and you! xoxo
Thank you! <3
I went to bed not knowing what I would do, and woke up with this idea. I love how sometimes our subconscious can go right to work on something while we sleep.
Whoa J, this is seriously . . . um . . . phenomenal! Love how much you accomplish with a curvy line or two, and negative space. Just know Maya’s smiling large.
Thank you so much, Cheryl. I LOVE this poem. Since discovering it (only a few National Poetry Days ago), I’ve read it so many times – there is such music in it, and attitude and power. What a gift Maya Angelou was. I love the idea that she is smiling large.
:~) colourful and truthful just like you
Haha! I’ll happily wear those adjectives, June!
😎
Big smile. Thanks, Joy.
It’s beautiful. I’m sure she would approve 🙂
I wanted to do something special for National Poetry Writing Month, but a. I’m finally on vacation and b. I already have poems post daily. Maybe a poetry marathon like I did last year would be nice.
Anyway, love your art! <3
Thanks, Karin, and really, every month is Poetry Month at your place. ; )
Love it, J. And you ARE a phenomenal woman! xoxo
As are you, Susan. xoxo
I adore Maya’s knack for using plain language as decorations for the remarkable. And you, Ms J, are a phenomenal woman. I love your illustration. <3
You have that same knack, Leah, although in both your cases, your arrangement of the plan speak makes it extraordinary. xox
Wonderful! I love it.
Thank you, Pam! xo
Oh, I absolutely love this!
Thank you so much, Annie!
