Moving On

It’s March. Time for me to try something new. Literally.

At least for March (and  maybe longer) I’m going to, each week, try something new. It might be something I’ve never done before, a food I’ve never eaten, a place I’ve never been, but every week, it’ll be something (with pictures if at all possible). I’m excited. And I’m up for suggestions if you have some.

I wanted to say a few words about my February project, The Secret Alphabet. It was cool.

Okay, maybe a few more words than that. I really loved doing it. I loved how, at first, it felt like there were letters everywhere, and then I realized only certain letters were everywhere – O’s and A’s, for instance. But other letters, like G’s (and C’s and D’s) were nowhere to be found. (Was so disappointed the day I wanted to write Imagine.) But I liked having to be flexible. I liked how every outing took longer than the time I had allotted, but not once did I feel bad about that.

I loved how aware I became of the places I visited, how many things I noticed, and occasionally remembered to photograph, that were not letters.

And one of the things I loved most was how many of you told me you were out looking for letters. How cool is that? And so here’s what I’m thinking. If any of you want to send me your pics (anyone, but especially those who found a discernible C, D or G), I’ll assemble them all into an alphabet pic. Neato, right?

It’s an open invitation. If you haven’t gone looking for the secret alphabet yet, I highly recommend it. Venture out, turn your brain sideways, and take pictures of what you see.

That’s it for now. Next Monday, something new. I can’t wait to see what it’ll be.

I can’t wait to see, either! I’ll live vicariously but I bet that I, like some of your readers, will be tempted to try new things with you and share our thoughts! Hope it is a good week for you.

  2. Tina on March 1, 2010 at 5:22 am

I was thinking something along the same lines this morning–about how I should try more new things, starting this Mar. 1.(I am signed up for a Soul Collage class later this month–something new for me). One of the things I want to try to do is find new places to dine(even a dessert) and to buy shoes that are at least a different color than black(I am in a shoe rut)

  3. Becky on March 1, 2010 at 5:28 am

I actually found a “g” this morning and a “b”. I was secretly trying to spell out goober — not as profound as your words but some of us are more the “Barney Fife” type (keeps the world balanced).
I think I’ll take some pictures for you.
Can’t wait to see what Monday’s hold for you — I’m not sure about the new food thing (that could go horrible wrong and ruin the week).
    Waiting… patiently to see.

Sounds like a fun month for you. Always good to explore new things. Good luck! I look forward to reading about it.

  5. Marisa Birns on March 1, 2010 at 8:22 am

This is fun! I will take the time on my walks to really look around me.

And if a “g” or “c” or “d” makes it presence, I will “snap” it up. 🙂

Yes. As I tweeted earlier before, “March is the month of expectation,” so said Emily Dickinson. I expect us all to make it good one.

  6. judy on March 1, 2010 at 8:38 am

Lisa, You do things I’ve never done all the time, world traveler. I think it will be fun. (Love your post today. Everyone should go read it.)

Tina, I like the name of that class. Soul Collage. I assume you will post all about it. (Hint, hint.) A good dessert place. That is a worthy cause. I might do that too.

Becky, Send me your G (and your B, I’m not that happy with my B’s.) I am braver than you when it comes to food. As long as they don’t touch, I can eat them, usually.

Mary, Thank you! Feeling very… adventurous.

Marisa, Absolutely. Send me pics! I like March as the month of expectation. I’m feeling that.

  7. Simon K Lloyd on March 1, 2010 at 9:34 am

It is always good to try new things, I thinking about trying to sleep for more than 5 hours (I like a challenge) ~ sending you good luck vibes for your endeavours and I’m sure you shall inspire us in ours.

    Thank you 🙂

  8. Dani H on March 1, 2010 at 9:38 am

{wiping my chin, having just spit out my coffee reading Becky’s “goober” ~ we must find you a “G” ~ imagine is an excellent word.

I’m right here with you on trying new things. The Twitter Dance Off last week was SO much fun~the next one is Tues. 3/2 & I hope you’ll join in J (3p your time, I think) and lots of new-to-me music to bounce to. I have my 1st Twitter Bake Off Fri. 3/5 ~ but the 32-layer cake has to be baked in REAL life. I’ve never done more than 4 layers. Next week I’m getting my (waist length) hair cut almost a foot ~ first haircut in years. Oh, and today I’m just getting ready to bake bread for the first time in about 30 years. It’s all enough to make a girl giddy!

We need more music and laughter in our lives, we need to see ourselves through others’ eyes, and holding each other’s hand ~ leap!!!

  9. Dani H on March 1, 2010 at 9:45 am

Oh, yes, and thank you for your inspiration, J. You ARE majestic and powerful and have a very sexy voice. *hugs*

  10. judy on March 1, 2010 at 10:17 am

Simon, If we would all stop talking to you on U.S. time, you might get more sleep. (So not going to happen.) <3

Dani, You rock!!! Holy cow! I don't know where to begin. I missed the whole dance off. I'll try to check it out tomorrow. And 32 layers? WTF? I didn't hear about this! Why must it be done?

Totally holding hands, and grateful for you!

  11. ironicmom on March 1, 2010 at 10:33 am

Wow. I’m impressed. And a wee bit inspired. Likely not enough to change my behaviour (ah, how well I know myself), but curious nonetheless. I look forward to reading about it (and might sneak a look for a letter or two on my drive home).

  12. Tricia on March 1, 2010 at 10:37 am

Up for suggestions? Right after your “weird” post? You are asking for it.

How about wearing sandals with jeans? Sleeping in a floor length nightgown? Eating a fried egg on top of a pancake? Brushing your teeth with a DRY toothbrush?

Hmmm, I could go on but I’m not that evil. But evil comes easier for me than pleasant, so I’ll have to think harder for something pleasant and return with a more amiable suggestion.

  13. Dani H on March 1, 2010 at 10:56 am

You need to be IN a Dance Off, J. Really~SO much fun. Bake Off wasn’t my idea, but it was me who posted link to the Martha Stewart recipe for the 32-layer cake. I’ve been wanting to try making it for over a year. 3 of us are baking it IRL & will tweet pics Friday 3/5 for Bake Off. Don’t know who’s going to judge?
And I just noticed~your hands are smaller than mine and your nails are prettier. 😉 *hugs*

It’s going to be fruit in your dessert – I just know it

  15. judy on March 1, 2010 at 1:28 pm

ironicmom, Laughing. I love that comment. You are honest and self-aware, and you have an awesome name. I’m impressed too.

Tricia, But, see I’ve done all those things which is how I knew I didn’t want to do them anymore ever again. You can be evil. I like your badass evil self, but I am not going to jump into a vat of whip cream. Wait…

Dani, How did you notice that?

Swampy, Stop it! (I do like apple pie, for the record. But there will no fruit in, or attached to, or touching, my chocolate. (And no fruit in or on my cheesecake either.)

Trying something new is always a great idea, I fell in love with it ever since I started making my own beauty products. That had quite a bit to do with you giving me the idea to do something new, with photos, etc.

Speaking of which… I remember you saying you’d try some of my homemade beauty products. All recipes are there, I especially love the one I just posted.
There’s something new for you to try 🙂 And of course take a photo of the end product 🙂

I’ll think of more and comment again if I come up with things you’d try 🙂

You know I have a button that Tim made me that says “making my bio more interesting” I wear it when I go exploring.
The last odd place I ventured into was a comic book store.
I think they may have never seen a woman.
Go to one. It’ll be an education. I guarantee They will lie down at your adorkable feet and worship your – j – ness.

  18. BOBBY on March 1, 2010 at 5:08 pm

What? Doing something new each week and blogging about it every Monday in March? I think that is totally ridiculous — why not do something new and post it on a Tuesday or weekend day? Or why not a post about doing something new in the month of June or October instead of March? Are you saying those months are not good enough for you?? Gee golly good gracious J, I just can’t agree with this at all!!

    — Sorry, was just practicing there! hahahaha!

  19. judy on March 1, 2010 at 6:45 pm

Estrella, Excellent idea! I will try one for sure this week. (More than one new thing is allowed!)

Karen, I’ve been to comic book stores lots of times. We have an awesome one downtown. There are girls there all the time, though. (This is California, baby. We’re ahead of the curve, remember. Just behind on the time line.)

Bobby, You mean being disagreeable and making fun of me isn’t your natural state? You practice? I’d like to suggest a different sport. (Any different sport.)

    • BOBBY on March 1, 2010 at 8:31 pm

I was completely making fun of MYSELF, on how I don’t always agree, in the comment above. (the “gee golly good gracious” and stream of “ha’s” should have been a tip off)

Trying new things is the best! It can kind of bring you back to childhood, when everything was new and exciting. I was fascinated by Sue’s (@manitisle brief avitar of her underneath the waterfall. That would be my suggestion. How perfect would that be on a hot day! Enjoy all of the new things you are going to do! Thanks for bringing me along for the ride.

  21. Estrella Azul on March 2, 2010 at 2:33 pm

Realize you just did something like this, but I know you love lists (no time pressure, any time you feel like it is okay), so here’s a chance to make another one. Think of it as a new thing to try 🙂

You have an award on my blog 🙂

  22. judy on March 2, 2010 at 2:46 pm

Joanne, I have been in a cave behind a waterfall once, but never in the thick of it. Definitely good for the list… but not in March. (I’m a wimp… unless maybe travel to a tropical island in March is on the list…)

Estrella, Okay! I’ll come see! (An award? Is it a sexy woman’s leg – electric sex?) 😉
