"The bottom line is this: If we want to bring about real change, then the choice isn't between protest and politics. We have to do both."
These words from President Obama are so important. We need to protest. We need to listen to, and stand beside, people of color. We need to not be silent in the face of racism and injustice. We need to care about each other. AND we need to vote in local, state, and national elections. It's not either or, it's all these things.
Between now and November, I'll be creating new art to encourage voting. I'll also be looking to help organizations that are focused not only on getting the vote out, but also on stopping voter suppression (a problem much more real than widespread voter fraud, for which there is no evidence).
Our democracy depends on free and fair voting, and our country needs us more than ever - not to bring something back that we've lost, but to build something better - more fair, more equal, more inclusive than ever before.
Our voices must be heard... in the streets AND in the ballot box.
